The first biography of Hopkins, by the American Jesuit Fr Lahey (1903–69), was greeted with respect by most reviewers, but its deficiencies have become more apparent with time. However, it included much new material from the 162letters and journals, and became the usual reviewing companion of the 2nd edition of the Poems.
