Denzil Quarrier was published when Gissing was correcting the proofs of Born in Exile. He was, on the whole, pleased with the critical reception accorded the novel, remarking both to his sister Ellen (14 March) and to Bertz {17 March) that Denzil Quarrier was favourably reviewed. He regarded the book as 'in fact, a strong defence of conventionality' and thought most readers could perceive this intention (Letters of George Gissing to Members of His Family, p. 326).
