ABSTRACT

This brief chapter outlines ways of assessing oral communication. It focuses on assessing presentations, discussions and oral proficiency, and on the uses of vivas and assessing consultations. Oral communication is often taught via videoed practical exercises so the chapter also includes some suggestions for teaching oral communication and providing feedback to students. Peerand self-feedback are often used in teaching oral communication so these methods are discussed briefly. Indeed, oral communication is a useful way of introducing students to self-and peer-assessment.
