ABSTRACT

within individual sub-groups being ordered alpha betically. But the ordering is inevitably somewhat arbitrary because of the nature of the variations, as for instance in dare not M32, where it was thought appropriate to display the m axim um variation of forms even though these are often of a phonological rather than m orphological kind. Here the solution suggested by O rton was to attem pt to relate the variations to the form from which each set has developed. Again, in have got M45 there are two distinct sets of forms, and it seems logical to list the m aterial alphabetically within each set, while in cursing M56 and doing M57, for example, the order has been determ ined on the basis of phonological groupings.
