ABSTRACT
IN THE SUMMER OF 1997 I traveled to South Africa, having received a New York University Research Challenge Fund grant to find or commission an essay on anti-apartheid street theatre. On the advice of Robert Sember, a South African living in New York, I began my trip in Grahamstown, home of a large annual festival.
