Training to work in the early years

DEVELOPMENTS IN TEACHER TRAINING Since the nineteenth century there has been organized training of teachers in England and Wales, set up originally by the voluntary bodies. In 1814 the British Society produced an outline for teacher training in primary schools which remained the model for courses until the early 1970s. It consisted of an academic entry qualification, a concurrent course of general education and professional training, a final examination and a probationary period of teaching, the whole culminating in the award of a teacher's certificate.
