ABSTRACT

Octavian, the nephew of Caesar, presented himself to the Romans as his heir and avenger. Indeed, his adoption by the Dictator was, from the political point of view, the most definite of his titles. But from the point of view of character and ideas the contrast between Caesar and the man who claimed to succeed him was very great. It would be hard to imagine a more absolute opposition than that between the direction in which Caesar turned Roman civilization and the tendencies which Augustus caused to triumph.
