ABSTRACT
FROMabouttheeleventhcenturytotheendoftheseventh, theGreeksspreadovertheMediterraneanineverydirection.TheyfoundednumerouscoloniesontheEasternandCentralMediterranean,theyreachedtheEuxinebytheHellespont andBosphorus,andtheymadetheirwaybeyondtheStrait ofMessinatotheWesternMediterranean.Inadditionto theoldGreece,whichhadbeenconfinedtothesouthernpart oftheBalkanPeninsula,therewerenow,amongotherterritories,anAsiaticGreece,coveringtheMgeanseaboardofAsiaMinor,andaWesternGreece,thecitiesofwhichwere collectedinthesouthofItalyandinthegreaterpartofSicily.TheMgeanSeaandtheIonianSeawereembracedinthe Hellenicworld.
