KHUGHANJA offered to make his headquarters outside the Great Wall in the Ordous country in order to guarantee the Surrender Cities in time of danger. This name, which continues in use throughout later Turkish history, is given to a line of fortified posts extending from the modern Kwei-hwa Ch'êng in Shan Si (the Tenduc of Marco Polo) to the extreme north-west corner of the Great Bend, and designed to prevent the nomads from crossing
