Helaidtributeonthefrontierpeopleseastandwest,from AssamtotherepublicsoftheMalavas,Arjunayanas, Yaudheyas,etc.-inotherwords,tothePunjab.Toput thematterbriefly,reducingthebombasticlanguageofthe inscriptiontopositivestatements,wemaysaythatthetrue domainofSamudraguptaembracedthewholeoftheGanges basinbutnotmore,andthatintheDeccanandintherest ofIndiahisoverlordshipwasnotassertedexceptwhenitwas maintainedbyeffectiveproofofhisstrength.
