ABSTRACT
The I has the same vocalization. Old Welsh lilan and Breton ledan reproduce an adjeetive IUanos, which is attested by place-names: Litanobriga, the forest Litana (in Cisalpine Gaul). It comes from a word pitanos, to which the Greek 7T'\&ruvos, from 7TAuTlis "broad", corresponds. Before a vowel, 1: and I were voealized as ar and al: Gaulish carnu-"COl'll ", Welsh carn ; Gaulish lalo-s "brow", Breton tal.
