ABSTRACT

The Very Reverend William Ralph Inge (1860-1954), extensively published philosopher, theologian, and essayist, was Dean of St Paul's, 1911-34. He wrote some widely popular articles as regular contributor to the Evening Standard (1921-46) and authored several books, such as The Church in the World (1927) and God and the Astronomers (1933). See Introduction, p. 24. Inge's agreement with Huxley on several essential points indicates the respect Huxley's position commanded from some important philosophers (see Jacques Maritain, Introduction, p. 36). Several opening paragraphs on 'syncretistic religion' and Wilbur Urban's The Intelligible World are omitted.
