ABSTRACT

When Mr. Faulkner's earlier novels appeared, they were received by the critics with an orgy of enthusiasm from which they are now suffering the inevitable hang-over. I myself think that Soldiers' Pay, The Sound andthe Fury, and Sartoris are three of the most remarkable novels written since the war; but I have to admit that some ofhis later work does lie very heavy on the stomach.
