ABSTRACT

The description I have given of inter-caste relations has emphasized the separateness of caste groups in Ramkheri. In the commensal hierarchy only the allied castes break this down to a great extent; the economic system is less caste-oriented with its neutral ground of agriculture, but here again the traditional link with an occupation is still effective in distinguishing many caste groups; and positions of village leadership are only now beginning to be filled by other castes than that of the headmen to any extent.
