ABSTRACT
Village life in Yugoslavia was by no means uniform. On the plains, as a rule, the villages were compact, sometimes built in more or less regular streets which might extend for a mile or two. The plot of land immediately neighbouring each house would be no more than a kitchen-garden, orchard and fowl-yard. The remainder of the farm land would be at various distances from the village, whether as strips in an open-field system or as consolidated holdings.
