ABSTRACT

In all branches of each sphere of social activity, recreational, athletic or benevolent, we found that American participation was overwhelmingly greater than English participation. Strict comparisons are difficult since it is impossible to separate the social from the benevolent in such activities as Rotary Clubs, masonic orders or hospital circles, which American middle-class society seems to proliferate. Nevertheless, it will become abundantly clear in the following paragraphs that English husbands and wives are unenterprising stay-at-homes compared with their American counterparts.
