Local Government in Rural Areas

WHILST central government legislation now provides the greatest single bulwark in the fight to prevent dese-cration of the countryside, the majority of the executive functions associated with this legislation devolves upon the members and officers of local authorities. These are urged on by a host of voluntary bodies who act as watch dogs in defence of all things rural. In order fully to appreciate how the fight is carried on it is necessary to look more closely at the origin and scope of local government.
