Village Pubs, Clubs and Institutes
THIS chapter will concern itself with the ordinary social and recreational activities which take place within the village and are associated with pubs and clubs, Women's Institute and British Legion branches, village halls and huts, commons and village recreation grounds. It will not deal with special interest activities such as lectures, drama and music which are considered separately in other chapters. But as we shall see there is much overlapping. Many organisations dealt with in this chapter also concern themselves with special-interest activities and an increasing number with welfare. Some individuals are members and leaders of many village activities and one may find that the president of the Women's Institute plays a leading part in the British Red Cross Society or the W.V.S., her husband is chairman of the British Legion whilst her daughter is active in amateur drama.
