ABSTRACT
THROUGHOUT the entire period of the research, and especially during its early stages, there was a widespread belief in the prison that it was an investigation into the causes of crime. In consequence, a great deal of material on this subject was gratuitously offered by both staff and prisoners, and even after the interest of the research in the relationships within the prison community was established, crime and ideas about its causes and treatment were constantly scattered throughout ordinary conversation.
