TheClassifyingSchoolexistedforallocationofgirlstosuitable TrainingApprovedSchools,afteraperiodofresidenceduringwhich eachgirlwasobservedandassessed,bothindailyleisureandwork situations-atbed-timeandmeal-timesandevenatbath-timesas well-andbythereputedlymoreobjectiveproceduresofintelligence, performanceandpersonalitytesting.Theclassifyingreportproduced ineachcasewasintendedasapracticalaswellasadescriptivedocument,andcommentsfromaHeadTeacherthatareportproved helpfulwerealwayswelcome.Commentswereinfactmixed;accordingtooneschoolofthoughttheassessmentrecordsweretoowordy, anddepictedgirls'responsestoaparticularschool,namelythe ClassifyingSchool.Doubtlesstherewereoccasionalmurmurson readingofdifficultbehaviour:'We'llcurethat...'Thesheetof psychologicalandeducationaltestmeasureswasnaturallypuzzling onmanyoccasions,withsuchwidelydiscrepantresultssometimes astobemeaninglesseventothepartiallyinitiated.Thefactthatsome 'average'girlswereprovedineverydaysituationstohavethecommon senseofan8-year-oldwas(ascanhappeninDaySchools)takenas nullifyingtheintelligencetest'sreliability.
