Staffing, Routine, and Work Conditions

The staffing in Girls' Approved Schools at the time of this research project was very different from that of the Boys' Schools, where the few women employed were in traditional female roles of looking after the cleanliness of boys and building, and the nourishment of boys and of unmarried male staff. Most men were married, living with their own family group in separate houses in the grounds, and the wives sometimes played parts in the female programme, with the Headmaster's wife traditionally cast as Matron. Cleaning was generally done by outside employees.
