ABSTRACT

While this study made no full-scale investigation of factors affecting sixth-form performance, some material on this subject was available. The present approach was designed to provide a rough parallel to the Early Leaving study. Early Leaving divided those entering grammar schools into three groups on the basis of their intelligence test scores at 11 + and into three groups on the basis of their O-level performance. The analysis then compared those whose relative achievement had improved, with those whose relative achievement had deteriorated over the five-year period. It showed that in general the working-class children and especially the sons and daughters of the unskilled achieved poorer O-level results or left sooner than middle-class children whose 11+ scores had been similar.
