ABSTRACT

The subjection of women to men has a long cultural history, and in our Western society their emancipation has taken place in a relatively period of time. The independence of a woman economically and politically means that her responses to herself and to others will be different from those of her ancestors. In many communities the married woman who is gainfully employed is the object of negative criticism and ridicule. Many critics of the career woman take the position that a mother’s leaving her home to work outside will have deleterious effects upon the children. While many older unmarried women may feel that their position and role in modern society are anomalous and unpleasant, they have much better chances for an adequate social and personal adjustment than did such women a few generations ago. The culturization of sexual life is all-important to the individual’s adjustment.
