ABSTRACT

The higher mental processes are based on elaborations of the simpler innate or instinctive modes of adjustment. The function of the higher mental processes can be brought out more clearly after a brief résumé of the simpler mechanisms. One of the important innate functions is primary drive. The innate mechanism for drive is provided by various nerve endings and receptors so arranged that strong stimulation is produced when the body is injured, starved, cold, etc. 1
