Crown Lodge

CROWN Lodge was founded in the eighteenth century as acharitable institution for the treatment of the insane ofthe 'middling classes'. Funds were raised by a public subscription from the prosperous townsfolk of a fast-growing city at a time when there was no local provision save that of the workhouses, which took in 'pauper lunatics', but gave them little or no hope of treatment or cure, and the private madhouses, which charged exorbitant fees and often had an evil reputation. The proposal to found a non-profIt-making hospital where middle-class patients might receive 'tender treatment' for a moderate payment was a new and enlightened one.
