At its broadest, the Further Education (FE) sector in the UK is taken to include most post-16 learning not undertaken in schools and higher education institutions: although learning offered in both these sectors (for example GCSEs, HNDs, etc.) is also undertaken in the FE sector. This chapter will focus on the guidance being delivered within the FE sector, including sixthform colleges. This spans a broad curriculum, including academic and vocational programmes to the 16-19 year cohorts; to an increasing number of adults of all ages; and at all levels of attainment. Over two-thirds of those studying within the sector are now mature students. The term guidance is taken to include the range of activities which support individuals in making decisions on learning and work.
