It must have struck readers who have studied the mental reactions of patients suffering from psychic impotence or fear of it, that the inhibitions of depression are similar to, or identical with the hopeless inertia of the impotent. The man who feels himself incompetent in this supreme test of virility has no courage for other activities and may, therefore, become genuinely depressed.
