chapter  6
Dreams and the Integration of the Psyche
Pages 24

In its regression movement the libido loosens the unconscious and activates the contents of the lower levels of the psyche. The very fact of libido regression indicates a weakness in the conscious attitudes; consequently, it is at such a time that non-assimilated, unconscious products tend to come to the surface. The formation of unconscious materials may take place either in the psyche of the individual or in the group as a whole. In the first case, the unconscious may express itself in the arts, dreams of all sorts, and in individual religious experience. In the latter case, unconscious products emerge in the form of myths, sagas, fairy tales, customs, rituals, enthusiasms, and mass possessions of various kinds.
