O BSERV ATIONS AND E X P E R IM E N T S ON T H E CONSONANTS

As com pared w ith the vowel-sounds, the consonants used to be-acoustically speaking-a little known and ra th e r neglected family. Phonetically , they h ad been studied in great detail, and the m ethod of their production-by tongue and lip m ovem ent and position-was in m ost cases well understood. The linguists, too, had studied them m inutely from the point of view of their gradual m etam orphosis in the course of language developm ent.
