ABSTRACT
As long as men alone are under consideration imitation and mutual understanding are two conceptions which seem to have little connexion with one another. But when we turn to the animal world we see that means of communication often merely lead animals to imitate some action performed by another. Behaviour of this kind lies midway between pure imitation, which is always spontaneous, and mutual comprehension of a higher order.
