ABSTRACT
AT THE FIRST SESSION of the Seminar, as an introduction to the method of teaching, and an exercise in the observation of human behaviour, Dr. Margaret Mead showed a film entitled Bathing Babies in three Cultures 1 . She explained that the word 'culture' was used in this title in the technical sense given to it by American and English anthropologists, with the meaning of the total behaviour of any group of people, and that the 'cultural pattern' of a people includes such common activities as the manner in which they bake their bread, get married or bury their dead. Observers of unfamiliar scenes can make many mistakes in attempting to analyse their data unless they are in possession of all the facts and can recognize the 'pattern' or design inherent in the whole situation.
