ABSTRACT

O x. K. SPATE rightly points out that the word 'communal' is so frequently applied to Fijian society that it is almost im-• possible to avoid its use, and he devotes a section to the elaboration of its ambiguities. Its use in the daily papers, and in the conversations of officials and the general public, however widespread, would not be a matter of note were it not for the underlying propositions that are implied.
