ABSTRACT

THE Crown Colony of Fiji consists of over 300 islands, but its total land area is small, 7,040 square miles. The two largest islands are Viti Levu, from which the Colony takes its name, and Vanua Levu. More than half the land area of the Colony (4,113 square miles) is on Viti Levu, which, in addition, contains most of the important townships including Suva, the capital, and the airport and principal road system. Viti Levu was the location of my field work.
