Atthisperiod(thelastdecadeofthecentury)Freudhad notsucceededveryfarinrelatingspecifictypesofsymptoms tospecifictypesofemotionalconflict;norhadheanyclear notionastotheperiodinlifeatwhichsuchpsychopathic dispositionswereatfirstformed.Therewasnoreasonto supposethattheynecessarilyinvolvedanythingmoreremote thanemotionalexperiencessuchaswereapparentincases likethatofthegirlunabletodrinkfromaglassofwater.He wasnotasyetconcernedtoshowanearlierorigin,some predisposingcause,forsuchmanifestationsinthelifeofthe patient.Butthecureofasymptomwassometimesfollowed bynewsymptoms,anditbecamenecessarytopenetrate deeper,i.e.,togofartherandfartherbackintothepatient's personalhistory.Adultexperienceseemedtocallfor emphasisupontheimportanceofchildhoodconflictsasbasic foradultmaladjustment.
