ABSTRACT

Gustave LeBon characterized “the coming era,” that very evidently now here, as the Era of Crowds; while I, in my opening remarks have styled it one of Militant Minorities. Our thoughts really “jump together”; there is no contradiction here; we have merely concentrated on two different features of the same phenomenon. The minority and the crowd are intimately correlated in action; the crowd is helpless until led, and the minority is powerless without the crowd which it engages to perform its will. Witness Eussia today with its very small group of militant “red” despots, and its servile, helpless, red-following masses.
