ABSTRACT
In experiments on the association of ideas, reference is made either to what is called free association of ideas—in which, on the appearance of a word or a picture, the subject says the first thing which comes to his mind or the whole chain of ideas which follow; or to controlled association—in which the subject is required to respond to a word by its opposite, or by a word which has the same sound, or to submit to some other prescribed condition as directed.
