It will be of some interest to consider how far the hypothesis agrees with psycho-analytical theory in the examples cited. It will be remembered that Freudian theory connects Masochism, through its relation to Sadism, with Anal-erotism. In our explanation of Masochism as a prolongation of fore-pleasure in which, though pain is apparently enjoyed the pleasure is really taken in an unconscious anticipation of the relief of tension, we actually mentioned no anal element. There was, however, in the case cited, such an element present as an earlier manifestation of postponement. The details may be given.
