ABSTRACT
The second major solution of inner conflicts, which we shall now discuss, is the self-effacing solution. It represents a move in a direction which is in all essentials opposite to that of the expansive solution. In fact the salient features of the self-effacing solution immediately come into clear relief when we see them in the light of this contrast. Therefore we shall briefly review some outstanding characteristics of the expansive type, focusing upon the questions: What does he glorify in himself—and what does he hate and despise? What does he cultivate in himself—and what does he suppress?
