Many of us have had the experience of taking a latchkey out of our pocket when we are passing a friend's house, and have usually found that it was a house where we felt thoroughly at home. Again when we leave an umbrella or walking-stick at somebody's house, we may assume that it means that we would like to return there. In order to be absolutely certain of such an explanation, it would of course be necessary for us to examine whether there really was such a motive at the bottom of our feelings. Psychoanalysis has drawn attention to many of these occurrences, and an increasing number of instances are now known.
