ABSTRACT
Material evidence specific to the kingship of Edward the Elder is scarce in the extreme and it is therefore important to subject each piece of it to close scrutiny in the expectation of adding something to our broader understanding of the context of the reign. The embroideries from the tomb of St Cuthbert provide a distinctive element within that body of material evidence which offer a unique insight into the very heart of Edward's household and family.
