ABSTRACT

The Duke of Lorraine's eldest daughter, Christina, was a great favourite with her grandmother, by whom she had been adopted after her mother's death in 1575. 1 Since that time, Christina had lived at the French court, being “nourished in affairs and public counsels” by the Queen Mother 2 , whom she somewhat resembled both in appearance and character. She would well remember the Lorraine-Joyeuse wedding festivals of 1581, so closely associated with her family. Though her name does not appear among those who took part in the Ballet comique, her young brother, the Marquis du Pont, was present at it and received a device, as did also her father, the Duke of Lorraine. She was, of course, also related to Joyeuse's bride and her sister Queen Louise.
