ABSTRACT

Six years ago, one of my old university classmates came back from America with the story of how he was making a salary of US$28,000. At the time it seemed an astronomically high sum. I couldn’t imagine anyone having this kind of income. I was envious and a bit resentful. At university, this man had been the dumbest among our circle of friends. We’d called him “Old Slow.” Now, everyone was a lot more respectful. But, in those days, just going to America was enough to make you a star.
