ABSTRACT

A landlocked country of 1.1 million square kilometres (424,200 square miles) located in the centre of South America, Bolivia's roots can be traced back through its two indigenous peoples - the Aymara and the Quechua. The Aymara civilization flourished along the banks of Lake Titicaca from about AD 600 to 900. By 1300, the powerful Incas of Peru, ancestors of the Quechua, had conquered the land.
