ABSTRACT
A small Central American nation bordering on Mexico, El Salvador, Honduras and Belize, Guatemala has a central highland separating its narrow Pacific coast and its lowlands on the Caribbean Sea. It covers an area of 108,900 square kilometres (42,000 square miles). A land of numerous volcanoes, some still active, Guatemala had a 1992 population of 9.7 million.
