ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the chain of events that led to the initiative to develop Deltametropolis and presents the main results of this action in the nearly three years that have passed since then. Three of them will be assessed here: its impact on everyday politics; its contribution to strategic planning; and its influence on design methodology. The aim of the foundation is to experiment with new decision-making methods and thus to get better decisions quicker. The aim of the foundation was to develop a method that Parliament might use in deciding on the fifth report on spatial planning due to appear in 1999. Second, Parliament decided they would prepare for the debate on the fifth report by evaluating the experiences with and results of the fourth report first. The social strategy that the members of the Deltametropolis are following is typically Dutch, in that it is quite unspectacular, low-key and bottom-up.
