ABSTRACT

Developers are always branded as the bad boys of the profession, as characters who are trying to throw their grandmothers out of their houses and not doing very much at all. The author believes that there are ways in which developers work with architects and share an ambition to make things happen and create great buildings. He started to meet a few designers and architects and learned about the value of design and how design can help. The building industry has a bad reputation, because once people get on site, everybody is trying to fight everybody else. The architect is having a go at the contractor, the contractor is trying to get extras off the client. Property developers are perceived to be hard-nosed people, who can't afford any good architecture and don't do any good for the community. The author has a great belief that architecture can add value. He illustrates this through the work of his company, Urban Splash.
