ABSTRACT

It is not uncommon in the midst of an improvisation to feel suddenly and inconsolably stuck, unable to see a way forward (backwards, sideways?), to find oneself wishing to be anywhere but where you are at that particular moment in time. These 'blocks' to our creativity often conceal feelings that we may initially be reluctant to expose. They may arise from impatience with other dancers, irritation, anxiety or embarrassment. Not knowing what to do with such antisocial or difficult feelings, we deny them, and in the same instant find ourselves removed from what we genuinely feel. This act of denial, or refusal to accept our own creative, lively responses effectively closes the door on our imagination.
