ABSTRACT

Because the approach to dance proposed in this book seeks to reach across the traditional structures and hierarchies of formal technique, it is not always possible to say 'this is a beginner's exercise and this an advanced exercise'. Clearly, some dancers will have progressed further in their explorations than others and will therefore be more confident, creative and accomplished, and eager to seek tougher challenges. Ultimately, the 'advanced' student is not someone who is merely possessed of a strong technique, but is able to extend their range and sensibility to dance with an absolute beginner or a seasoned professional, and who, perhaps most importantly, is capable of translating improvisatory experience into convincing performance or shape it into choreographic form.
