ABSTRACT

On my first visit to Japan, in 1996, I was impressed with the students' ability to listen to each other, a quality that seemed an essential part of Japanese culture. What I offered in the workshops seemed to be quickly absorbed and understood, and yet returning to England I had the uneasy feeling that I'd somehow missed something essential. The following year, while teaching at the Aichi Arts Centre in Nagoya, I found the answer to what had been troubling me.
