ABSTRACT

Music can relax, lift or inspire us to move. It can lead us to shared experience and celebration, even trance. But it can also distract us from some of the most demanding and rewarding areas of our work as improvisers. Given a rhythm to follow and sufficient encouragement people will dance. The advent of rave culture means that thousands of people in Britain can and regularly do dance together en masse83 • People seem to share the experience and appear to be dancing together but elements of individual choice are sacrificed within such dance events for the anonymity of mass experience. The music, and often the pharmaceutical industry, call the tune.
